Background
Angus Energy, an independent onshore oil and gas development company, operates the Saltfleetby B site, the largest operational onshore gas well-head in the UK. In 2022-2023, the company installed two compressor skids to enhance gas production at the site. These skids, powered by refurbished CAT 3512 engines, faced multiple failures shortly after installation. The downtime became commercially significant, and Angus Energy required a partner with extensive gas engine expertise to provide immediate remedial work and ongoing support.
Challenge
Angus Energy needed a partner to ensure continuous and efficient operation while reducing downtime.
The compressor skids, integral to the gas production process, suffered from unreliable performance due to limited field support and lack of specialist engine knowledge. As a result, Angus Energy needed an experienced partner to ensure continuous and efficient operation while reducing downtime.
The initial O&M scope and cost expectations were unrealistically set by the original equipment supplier, creating a challenge for Ylem Energy to align these with operational realities.
Solution
Influenced by YLEM having deep expertise in operating CAT 35 series engines, was selected by Angus Energy.
YLEM Energy, with its deep expertise in operating CAT 35 series engines, was selected by Angus Energy after demonstrating real-world experience by diagnosing and remedying issues at the Saltfleetby B site. YLEM Energy secured a five-year O&M contract to support the site’s two gas engines, ensuring the skids’ availability and performance.
YLEM Energy approached the project with a commitment to understanding Angus Energy’s needs, offering expert advice, and maintaining open and honest communication. By tailoring an O&M package specifically for the Saltfleetby B site, YLEM Energy provided peace of mind to Angus Energy, ensuring that the gas engines would no longer be a critical failure point for production.

YLEM Energy’s experience with CAT 35 series engines and its strong supply chain for spare parts played a pivotal role in the project’s success.

The project took approximately 12 weeks to implement. During the first six weeks, YLEM Energy assessed the engines, performed remedial work, and developed a technical scope for ongoing O&M. The remaining six weeks involved contract negotiations, which were completed despite the festive period delaying some stakeholders’ availability.

Result
YLEM Energy secured a five-year O&M contract, including full control system upgrades for both gas engines. This partnership has helped Angus Energy focus on site expansion and other improvements, confident that its gas engines are in reliable hands.
