Dalluaine Distillery, Speyside, Scotland
Along the river Spey at Diageo’s Dailuaine Distillery, the company invested £6million to create a new bioenergy plant which used an aerobic digestion technology to treat waste water. The use of AD technology to produce electricity for use on site was a first in malt distilling, putting Dailuaine at the cutting edge of renewable energy innovation.
The plant was designed to use the liquid residues from the distillation process to generate bio-gas for use in a Combined Heat & Power (CHP) plant to generate electricity and steam which was used to power the onsite distillery and dark grains plant.
The plant generated 0.5 MW of biogas, providing 40% of electrical demand for the site and reduces CO2 emissions by 250 tonnes. At the end of the process all that is left was clean water which can be discharged without any environmental impact and solid bio-fertiliser which can be used by farmers.
The investment in green technology at the site helped to contribute to 50% of the distillery company’s power requirement coming from renewable energy.
A high efficiency Ylem Energy CHP system and a Byworth Waste heat steam boiler converted the biogas into steam and electrical energy.
These two energy streams dramatically reduced the distillery’s reliance on the use of fossil fuel based energy inputs from the national gas and power grids.
The CHP was a Perkins reciprocating biogas engine specifically designed to run on biogas with a methane content of around 60%.
The shaft of the engine was connected to a low-voltage generator, generating three-phase 415 volts 50Hz renewable electrical power to be utilised on site.
Anaerobic digestion can be applied into a multitude of industries for various types of biological by-products and wastes :
- Trade effluent from food and beverage manufacture with COD loads of over 3000kg per day
- Solid food wastes with dry matter contents between 3-80% dry matter
- Food offcuts and non conforming food production whether de-packaged or contaminated
- Farm manures and dung
- Energy crops like whole crop - rye, energy beet, grass silage, maize silage.
Diageo is the world’s leading premium spirits company and the largest distiller of Scotch Whisky, with 28 malt distilleries and one grain distillery in Scotland, all producing the highest quality spirit for brands such as the world’s number one selling Scotch Whisky, Johnnie Walker.
